Womad 2013

In April 2011 Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness announced in Cafe del Mondo that the world famous WOMAD festival would be here for the City of Culture celebrations in 2013. The four-day festival attracts about 30,000 people every year.

The concert celebrates the World of Music Arts and Dance and has won a reputation as a festival for the whole family.

It was co-founded by Peter Gabriel and began in Shepton Mallet in 1982.

Since the first WOMAD festival, there have been more than 160 events in 27 countries.

Eddie Kerr, director of Derry-based global charity SEEDS, and Darren Ferguson, manager of Belfast group Beyond Skin, flew to Abu Dhabi with a simple cardboard sign bearing the slogan: ‘Womad for Derry’.

Mr Kerr said: “They basically told us everybody had come with big pitches and presentations and wined and dined them and we came with a cardboard sign and bought them a coffee.

Mr Kerr stressed that Martin McGuinness also played a key in bringing the festival to Derry.

“He gave the level of support needed — so it wasn’t just the piece of cardboard,” he said.
